Lesson Description

Join INEOS TEAM UK engineers and learn how to analyse the data from a training run on board Britannia, the cutting edge 60mph America’s Cup sailing boat.

In this lesson we ask, “How do we make sure we get the best performance out of the boat?”

The resource includes a video introducing the importance of data and providing speed time data for students to analyse. A comprehensive editable teacher PowerPoint presentation including teaching notes and a student exercise in plotting and analysing speed time data.

Along with a look at how we can calculate distance from a speed time graph. Students then use their analysis skills to calculate the best strategy for the race team to adopt following the start of the race.

This lesson is one in a series of five exploring forces through practical investigations linked to the real-life exciting context of the British America’s Cup team. Each lesson focuses on a series of key questions and is aimed at the knowledge and skills requirements of KS3 science, it also has relevance for the numeracy content for both Engineering and Design Technology students at KS4.
