Gatsby Benchmark 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers.
In addition to the STEM Crew online curriculum linked learning resources, the Meet the Team videos highlight individuals’ roles within a technology and design driven professional sports team. This will help students to contextualise their learning and allows them to develop knowledge and understanding of the wide range of careers involved in a professional sports team.
Meet Andrew ‘Animal’ McLean both a highly experienced inshore and offshore racer as well as a qualified mechanical engineer. He has a vast amount of experience, having competed for four America’s Cups and in two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR). All that experience in both sailing and engineering has led him to his current role as Lead Systems Engineer at INEOS TEAM UK.
Graham ‘Grazy’ Goff has a dual role at INEOS TEAM UK. Off the water, he is the crane manager, responsible for all crane operations including lifting Britannia in and out of the water. On the water, he is a support boat driver, responsible for Chase 4, the team’s equivalent to a Formula 1 Pit Wall. It is a combination perfectly suited to Graham, who has spent the majority of his life close to the water and close to boats.
The Boat Captain, responsible for ensuring BRITANNIA is prepared for sailing and her crew are as safe as possible every time they head out on the water.

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.
5. Encounters with employers and employees
Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.
By linking the videos to curriculum learning they will help highlight the importance of STEM subjects for gaining entry to a wide range of careers, providing clear evidence of supporting Gatsby Benchmark 4: linking curriculum learning to careers as well as providing an encounter with an employee.
